Travelers Against Plastic (TAP) Special Edition Kanteen

When Americans travel abroad, the vast majority buy bottled water. It is estimated that 48.6 million Americans travel internationally each year*. With average trip lengths of two weeks and a consumption rate of three bottles of water per day, an estimated 3.5 billion plastic water bottles* are discarded worldwide by travelers annually.

Single-use water bottles are expensive, unhealthy, hard on the environment, and challenging for local communities ultimately responsible for the use, reuse and disposal of plastic waste. No traveler wants to leave a trail of plastic water bottles behind them, but many don't know how to avoid it.

Travelers Against Plastic (TAP) is spreading awareness about the impacts of disposable plastic water bottles and campaigning their solution to hydrating while traveling abroad: carry a reusable water bottle and a SteriPEN. Klean Kanteen has partnered with TAP and created a 27oz bottle that features a 100% stainless interior and an easy to fill, wide-mouth design (compatible with most backcountry water filters). Klean Kanteen will donate 25% from the sale of each bottle to the TAP campaign, helping educate and encourage tour operators and travelers about the impacts of bottled water.

"Travelers leave behind thousands of plastic water bottles in the mountain communities. It is extremely difficult to bring down for disposal. This project can have a big impact if individual travelers are educated about alternatives to discourage using plastic water bottles." - Tour group in Nepal

About Travelers Against Plastic (TAP)

TAP is made up of volunteers from Crooked Trails and Wildland Adventures; two eco-tour companies from Seattle that decided tours needed to educate their travelers about alternatives to a trail of plastic water bottles. The TAP Campaign aims to spread awareness about the impacts of disposable plastic water bottles, and to garner support from outbound tour operators to get their clients carrying reuseable water bottles. The TAP campaign is helping travelers realize the benefits of cleaning one's own water while traveling. It's cheaper, safer and better for the environment.

*According to data released by the U.S. Office of Travel & Tourism Industries, 8.1 million U.S. citizens traveled abroad in the first two months of 2012. Calculated across the calendar year, approximately 48.6 million Americans travel internationally each year. Estimating each traveler takes a 2 week trip and consumes an average of 3 bottles of water a day, 3.5 billion plastic water bottles are used and discarded worldwide by travelers annually.
